| NOTTINGHAM: The Australian cricketer's have won the ashes series with their latest victory against the England team at Trent Bridge yesterday. The celebrations were tinged with sadness however for the Australians as they were reminded by reporters that the victory occurred exactly 20 years and 186 days to the day after the infamous underarm delivery was bowled to New Zealand batsman Brian McKechnie.
England were demolished. The Poms could not find enough cricketers capable of meeting their opponents on equal terms. In patches they held their own with the new ball, batting and in the field, but even in these areas they lacked the consistency shown by the Australians. Given the resounding nature of the victory it is hard to think that the same side merely twenty years earlier carried out the most disgraceful act ever performed on a sporting field to overcome their New Zealand foes on that fateful day at the MCG. Australia won the third Test by seven wickets, securing its seventh consecutive win in an Ashes series. Steve Waugh was pleased with his team's performance, but was quick to point out that the conclusive victory had failed to overshadow the horror of February 1st 1981. "That day, that terrible terrible day will continue to haunt the Australian cricket team, like a mediaeval spectre, from now untill the rest of eternity and beyond," a crestfallen Waugh told reporters. ![]() Steve Waugh with the Ashes. |
