LEVIN: Scott Styris was celebrating at his parents home in Levin after being named New Zealand Cricketer of the Century at an awards dinner in Christchurch last night. Styris beat off a strong field which included Bevan Congden, Richard Hadlee, Glen Turner and Richard Petrie.

Styris a relative unknown in New Zealand until recently has received his award on the back of the last years State Insurance Max Black Capz stunning victory over the West Indies. In this match Styris blasted a quickfire 17 and captured 3 wickets. But perhaps his greatest moment was his pressure catch to dismiss Brian Lara in the KFC Max Zone.

Styris in his victory speech was typically humble giving credit to all Max players who went before him; "You know they were the pioneers of Max those guys. People gave them no respect but they stood up to the purists and created a great spectacle. I share this award with you Bulfy, Peaches and Heathy". A clearly emotional Styris also gave thanks to the games creator, Martin Crowe, "Thank you Marty for you vision and allowing it to become a reality".

Styris has been inundated with cards congratulating him since his victory. Walter Hadlee said Styris deserved the award not only for his playing ability, but for his work towards making Max a global sport.

Not all commentators were happy with Styris' victory however. Speaking at a function in Adelaide, the greatest cricketer of them all Sir Don Bradman, a renowned Max purist said that Styris had benefited from some recent rule changes. Bradman has been a vocal supporter for the return of the fourth stump.

Leading New Zealand politician Rod Donnell said that Styris would be commended for his achievement by gracing a new New Zealand 40c stamp. Prime Minister Helen Clarke also gave Max another boost with her decision to implement "The History of Max Cricket 1995 to the present day" in the new School Certificate History curriculum.
