| TE RAPA: A Te Rapa man was last night celebrating after winning both a Quinella and a Trifecta on the same day. Nick Miller (38), labourer of Te Rapa, picked the Quinella in Race 3 before going on to pick the Trifecta in Race 8.
Miller correctly backed No 3 Gold Medallion and No 9 Jonties Pride in Race 3 the Michael Harrison Memorial Gallop for two year olds. As Jonties Pride was somewhat of an outsider the Quinella netted Miller a cool $220. Any thoughts Miller had of getting on a winning streak however were quickly dashed when neither That's the Lad or My Sherona finished in the top 3 in race 4. Miller then had only moderate success, picking the third place getter in race 7, before finally going on to land the big one in race 8. Miller successfully picked Summer Babe, Trigger Cut and Likely Lad as the top three finishers. Although Miller conceded that picking Trigger Cut, which paid $12.30 for the win and $3.20 for the place, was a risky move he was certain he would come in after getting a hot tip from the guy at the bakery's brother-in-law the previous night at the butcher's. The risk paid off and Miller picked up $5568.34 from his initial $5 investment. The celebrations started soon after the finish of Race 10 the Lawrence Bradford Motors Stakes, with a formal reception in the public bar of the Railroad Hotel in Te Rapa. After a brief speech by Miller in which he outlined his now celebrated tactics, attendees were invited to "drink whatever you like cause the TAB's got this one boys!" It is understood that celebrations continued well into the night when Miller reported told long time friend and fellow race goer Fred Maxwell that he was a bloody good bugger. ![]() Trigger Cut, leading Summer Babe and Likely Lad home. |
