| GREYMOUTH: Local covers band 'Beats Working' are to face the New Zealand Music Tribunal after an officer attended a gig in which the band played an unauthorised cover of little known Police song Born in the 50's. "Beat's Working" could have escaped with a censure, however, the group failed to provide a rendition of April Sun in Cuba, leaving the attending officer with no alternative but to begin proceedings against the band.
Tribunal spokesperson Gavin Henderson stated that although the offence was relatively minor, it was important that measures were taken against groups to ensure the integrity of the New Zealand Music Tribunal was maintained. "The songs that member groups can perform are well documented on our website. It is important that member bands stick to these tried and true formulas. It is essential for the sake of the New Zealand Cover Music Industry that originality is nipped in the bud at the earliest possible moment." This is the second blow in as many weeks for 'Beat's Working' who last week faced disciplinary action for their shoddy rendition of perennial favorite Summer of 69. The tribunal found that singer/guitarist Bryan Harris not only managed to play the wrong chords in the intro to the song, but that he got the words wrong in the second verse. He was also fined for continuing to play the chords to the chorus without realizing that each of his fellow band members were taking it to the bridge. The following list includes songs that have been authorised by the Tribunal (an asterisk denotes that a song is mandatory and therefore must be played at least once during the course of an engagement.) April Sun in Cuba* Bliss* Dirty Old Town (* for Irish/folk bands) Knocking on Heavens Door* - (Eric Clapton version only) The Gambler (* rural districts only) Ten Guitars (* T and C clubs only) Wild Thing Summer of 69 I'm a Believer Wonderful Tonight Cocaine Baby can I hold you tonight Sweet Caroline Hey Joe One hand in my pocket Sweet Home Alabama Mustang Sally Another brick in the wall Lay down sally Honkey tonk woman Walk on the wild side We've gotta get out of this place Dreadlock holiday Hotel California Black velvet Life is a highway Stir it up Anything by the Commitments/Blues Brothers/Rolling Stones General Blues Jam, (in any key.) ![]() Beats Working |
