| Jack Black, Hollywood movie star and half of comedy rock duo Tenacious D, played the entire Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny album to casual acquaintance Rodney Lee on Friday evening. Lee and Black met at a mutual friend’s house, and Lee accepted Black’s offer of a lift after they discovered they were both attending the same party later that evening in Los Angeles. According to Lee, the Tenacious D album started playing on Black’s stereo immediately after he started his car.
“At first I was a little surprised that he would be listening to his own album in the car, I even thought he might be embarrassed being caught out listening to his own band, but he just looked at me and said ‘Alright Wonderboy!’ before turning up the stereo and launching into the chorus.”
According to Lee, Black became more and more animated and excited as the album progressed.
“I thought he would just play one song as a joke, but whenever a new song started he would turn it up louder than the last one and say, ‘Oh man you have to hear this one!’
“There were certainly times when I feared for my life. He was driving down the interstate singing at the top of his voice, looking over at me the whole time. He probably should have been spending more time looking at the road - he almost drove into the back of a delivery van during the guitar solo of Master Exploder."
The Tenacious D onslaught didn’t stop until the pair arrived at the party.
“It got a little awkward near the end of the ride. We got to the party and I went to get out of the car, but Jack insisted that I sit in the car with him and listen to one last song. This went on for three songs. Luckily someone else drove up to the party, or I else I could still be sitting there… He offered me a ride home, but I decided to get a taxi.”
