WELLINGTON: North Island on Air has announced its latest round of funding for 2001. Two new North Island drama series will be funded along with one North Island comedy series and sixteen North Island documentary programs.

North Island on Air was established as NZ on Air in 1989 in order to help fund a range of New Zealand made programs. The name change occurred in 1990 when Wellington based executives got sick of fielding funding inquiries from the South Island.

"The name change came about as the most blatant way to let those people in the South Island know that they just aren't ever going to get any money out of us, no matter how many chardonnays they may buy us," stated Chairman Rick Duncan.

The North Island Film Commission is expected to announce its latest round of funding early next week. It is anticipated that the commission will fund a further eight projects for various North Island directors.
