NEW YORK: René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s famous cartoon character Asterix has announced that he is formally changed his name to *. The mustachioed Gaul, hero of such adventures as Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and the Magic Carpet and Asterix and Obelix All At Sea announced his decision to the assembled media at the recent Emmy Film & Television Awards® held in New York.

The Cartoon Character Formerly known as Asterix, announced he was making the change to avoid becoming typecast as a potion swigging ancient Gaul. "Although I am grateful for the profile that playing Asterix has given me," * told reporters, "I want to try my hand at different roles. Roles that will challenge my skills as a person and as an actor." Spinner understand that Asterix will audition for the role of Bill Clinton in an upcoming movie adaptation of the President's life.

* was accompanied to the awards ceremony by long time partner, obese fictional character, Obelix. Obelix is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Obelix, a Gaul who possessed special magical powers after falling into a tub of magic potion as a boy.
