| HUNTLY: Clint Mills, drummer in popular Waikato covers band Beer Supply, is starting to irritate fellow band members by playing his cowbell in every song that the band performs.
Long time friend and suffering band mate Tama Hayes, for one, was getting pretty sick of the sound of the overused percussion device. "It started off when we did a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman." Clint had just been to the semi-final between Waikato and Otago so he bought his cowbell along to practice for the drum parts. Next thing you know he's finding some way to add the damned thing into every bloody song." Although Hayes was willing to concede that the cowbell adds a little bit of a spark to some of their set list, he was quick to point out that Clint's cowbell infatuation was getting out of control. "In some songs it works really well, like on the breakdown of "Life is a Highway" it sounds quite cool, but is there any need to add a cowbell to "Hotel California?" We're starting to sound like some sort of line-dancing band." Hayes and fellow band member Kyle Miller (bass guitar, bv's) have arranged to meet Clint at the Commercial Hotel in Huntly over a couple of jugs to discuss the possibility of leaving the cowbell out of a few of their songs. "I know it's a cliché, but so many bands split because of creative differences. It's really important that we talk about it now, before things get out of hand. Beer Supply have built up quite a following over the past 4 years. It would be a shame to see that go up in smoke after all this time." ![]() Beer Supply vocalist Perry Jackson shows reporters the offending cowbell. |
