| NELSON: Local man Derek Sutton was adamant local superstar Bic Runga was "fully checkin" him out during her concert at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson on Saturday Night.
Sutton (44), a part time apple thinner and comic book writer of Motueka, was standing near the bar during the majority of her performance, and first noticed Runga glance towards him during her third song. "She just kept looking over towards me throughout the show," contends Sutton, who although happily married did concede that she was "kind of cute." This is not the first time that a music celebrity has been enamoured with Sutton's boyish good looks claims Sutton. When Blondie came to Christchurch in 1981 Deborah Harry gave him the "glad eye" half way through "Heart of Glass". Long time friend and fellow gig goer Spencer Bailer, although impressed with Sutton's "pulling power", was adamant that one day it would be him that would be receiving the special attentions of a celebrity or female of high social status. "Derek always gets all the chicks around here, one day my time will come" Bailer stated with conviction. However, another friend who attended the gig, Ray Archfield, was less certain that Runga was directing her gaze Sutton-bound. "With all those stage lights she'd be lucky to see past the foldback's. There's no way she was checking him out. Next he'll be telling you that half-arsed Blondie story from the early 80's." ![]() Bic Runga |
