| Filcher Building hails drop in workplace decapitations |
Monday, 23 June 2008 16:13
AUCKLAND: One of New Zealand's biggest construction firms has announced a 25 per cent drop in building site decapitations.
Filcher Building figures show that in the year to March, 30 workers were decapitated on its building sites, compared to 40 in the previous quarter.
"This is a terrific result for us," said Filcher boss Barry Filcher.
"It shows that some of the workplace safety measures we have introduced are really taking effect."
In the latest accident, 26-year-old Harry Parsons's was head was severed when a sheet of roofing iron slid down on him as he scaled a ladder.
Mr Parson's body fell at the feet of his fellow workers, twitching, spurting blood from his neck and delaying production by 30 minutes.
"That was a nasty one," said Mr Filcher.
"But we believe our workplace decapitation rate is really something to be proud of." |
