WELLINGTON: The latest Spinner/Colmar Brunton Poll released last night shows that the United Party has surged to 3% support, following Labour with 38% and National with 34%.

United leader Peter Dunne is also catching Helen Clark as preferred Prime Minister with 2% support, 29% behind Helen Clark with 31%. National's Jenny Shipley trailed in the preferred Prime Minister stakes with only 1% support, which is two percent lower than the support shown for former National leader Jim McClay, who polled with a surprising 3%.

Dunne took the good showing in this latest poll to state the United Party's case to the media. "For too long our policies have been ignored by the public and media alike," said a fired up Dunne. "There is a general misconception that we are merely taking up space here in Wellington and that we are contributing little or nothing to the public of New Zealand.

I feel that this latest poll vindicates the work that we have been doing and shows that the people of New Zealand want change. They want a government that does what ever it is that our policies say that we will do. And they want it done reasonably well, without making too many major mistakes."

The poll was conducted in the first week of July and surveyed 1000 eligible voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 per cent.
