AUCKLAND: A city councillor sent a weekly meeting into panic yesterday when he announced the impending destruction of Auckland's iconic Dominion Road. Councillor Don McGlashen took the floor following a carried motion from Mayor John W. Banks to eradicate city footpaths to make way for more roads. He alerted councillors to a very real danger in Auckland city that requires immediate attention.

"Dominion Road is bending under its own weight," announced McGlashen. Panic gripped the city council meeting as councillors and media were told the seriousness of the situation. Not only is Dominion Road's own weight making it bend, but according to McGlashen it also appears to be "shining like a strip cut from a sheet metal plate, 'cos it's just been raining."

It's not clear what has caused Dominion Road to actually bend, although Councillor McGlashen did mention a halfway house halfway down Dominion Road as a possible cause.
