NELSON: Motueka resident Jimmy Brown was celebrating last week after he paid off the laser disc machine he bought on hire purchase in 1994. "It feels unbelievable. It's like this immense liberating experience," said Brown. "I bought this baby for $8,000 ten years ago. It came with three free titles on two-and-a-half years interest free terms. It was and is a classic invention, with picture quality well above and beyond video capabilities. Now that I'm no longer paying it off I should be able to purchase more discs."

Brown, 31, visited nearby Nelson in an attempt to search for further laser disc titles. His journey was unsuccessful.

"Looks like I'll go home, watch Reservoir Dogs again and probably get down to Bond and Bond tomorrow to pick up a DVD player," Brown said. "They've got this great deal on entire Yamaha home theatre systems. I can get a DVD player, receiver and speakers all for $2,499 - six months interest free, too. I can have that paid off in three years."
