WELLINGTON: New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is pushing for the voting age to be raised to 65. In a submission to the Electoral Reform Commission, Peters has proposed that only New Zealander’s with developed levels of maturity should be entrusted with the responsibility of selecting new governments.

“For too long New Zealand has been at the mercy of fickle minority groups, such as Professionals, Workers, Women, Greenies and Students. By increasing the voting age, we will be able to restore this imbalance in the electoral system, to ensure that all right-thinking New Zealanders get a say in how this country is run.”

Peter’s submission is understood to be supported by the United Party, National and the New Zealand Party.
