| DUNEDIN: Dunedin man Shane Harris today announced that he still remembered his very first Werthers Original. The hard boiled sweet was given to him by his grandfather when he was eight years old.
"We were driving through Caversham on the way to a muffler and exhaust specialist in South Dunedin. The valiant had been backfiring since he bought it a few weeks earlier so Pop was taking it in for his mate Trev to have a look at" Harris recalled at a press conference at The Wharf Hotel. "I was living with my grandparents at the time because Mum was in hospital after being whacked with a pool cue at the Green Island boozer the Saturday before. We hadn’t seen the old man since he took off with some tart from housie a few years earlier". Mr Harris’s younger brother Brent (3), his sister Crystal (7), and cousin Danny (14) were also present at the time. "Brent had just thrown up in the backseat, and Pop was fishing around in the glovebox trying to find something to wipe it up with. All he came up with was an old Turf Digest, which he threw over to Danny to start wiping". However his grandfather apparently also found an unwrapped Werthers Original. "It must have been there a while ‘cos it had bits of fluff and a pube stuck to it" Mr Harris said. His grandfather tossed the sweet to his grandson who picked the crap off and promptly popped it in his mouth. Mr Harris rated the experience highly, comparing it to his first cigarette a fortnight later. When asked what he would give his grandson, Mr Harris replied that he too would give him a Werthers Original "or a pint of scrumpy jack’s cider." |
