Clark delays climbing Student Debt Mountain for another year

WELLINGTON: Postponing her tradition of climbing famous peaks over the Christmas break, Prime Minister Helen Clark is to delay climbing Student Debt Mountain for another year. When in opposition, Clark often boasted about her intention to conquer Student Debt Mountain, but prime ministerial duties have distracted her from her promise.

Insiders suggest that Clark's interest quickly waned upon standing at the base of the towering peak. Detractors suggest she was merely invoking the spectre of the mighty mountain in a cynical attempt to gain office.

Suffice to say, climbing commentators have noticed that Clark has not even mentioned the name of the infamous peak since being elected to power in 1999.

Indeed, many feel that Clark will delay any assault on the magnificent peak until she has more time for planning. Perhaps even delaying her attempt until she can fully plan an attack from the relative safety of the opposition benches. </p>

In 2004 Student Loan Mountain is expected to reach the dizzying heights of $7 billion dollars. With the size of the average loan being $12,000, the interest from 280 students (or 40 medical students) will cover Clark's yearly salary of $305,000.
