WELLINGTON: Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao told New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Elizabeth Clark that New Zealand must accept China’s One China policy to ensure convivial relations between the two nations. China’s One China policy insists that it is only a matter of time before Taiwan joins Hong Kong in a unified China.

“I ask you. How can a chicken walk without feet?” asked President Hu. “We have one foot now with Hong Kong, it is evident we must now have Taiwan - our other foot. Once we are whole we must build a nest. And Korea, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia will be that nest. This is not optional.”

Clark, who quietly mumbled something about human rights while Hu was briefly distracted by a waiter, was completely supportive of China’s policy. “Although our nations differ in many ways - basic protection from political persecution, freedom of speech, elections, labour laws, environmental legislation, levels of corruption - we are alike in many other ways, like our ability to cast aside our mutual contempt in pursuit of those mighty trade dollars.”
